Department of Urban and Regional Planning

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of the programme is to provide its students with a broad based knowledge in planning, hinged on the fact that man’s ability to manage his environment sustainably can only proceed from a knowledge-driven process. This programme will instill in students a sense of enthusiasm and responsibility for effective space engineering and the ability to proffer sustainable solutions to diverse society’s planning and development challenges.

OBJECTIVES

The specific objectives of the programme are to:

  • Equip students with qualitative, quantitative and design skills so that they become efficient and functional physical planners; first to deal with the peculiarities of the Niger Delta environment and then society in general.
  • Produce planners with awareness and comprehension of the range of environmental challenges and opportunities in the immediate and wider region.
  • Provide a platform for exposure to new developments and advances in technology, policies, processes; as well as new concepts and practices in environmental education.
  • Provide knowledge of management systems, legal framework and social/cultural issues pertaining to utilization of natural resources .
  • Develop planning into practice relevant to communities and workplaces of today.
  • Provide knowledge about geophysical and biological processes and constraints characterizing human activities and their interaction with the environment.
  • Develop skills in the application of monitoring and evaluation tools used by planning practitioners.
  • Provide knowledge and skill-base from which graduates can proceed to further in specialized areas of planning.
  • Instill in students the competence needed in the preparation of development plans and schemes
