Medical Laboratory Science

PHILOSOPHY

Vision
Medical Laboratory Science is a dynamic and exciting profession with long term career prospects. This degree programme is designed to provide a broad basis of fundamental scientific knowledge and application such that the graduates of the programme are skilled to meeting the changing needs of modern scientific knowledge in Health Care and to enable them proceed for further training. The BMLS programme is built around a core of basic and advanced theoretical knowledge and clinical practices, through the experienced Lecturers and Medical Laboratory Scientists.

The object of the degree is to impart this knowledge of modern biomedical research, theories, skills and techniques to the students. Skills learnt in the Medical Laboratory Sciences are at the forefront of advances in medical research, including Medical Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Medical Microbiology, Haematology, Blood Transfusion Science, HistoCyto Sciences as well as Pharmaceutical industry, Forensic science, Veterinary science, Health, Safety and Food sciences. Therefore, a graduate of the program will have a science degree (B.MLS) appropriate for a career in a wide variety of industrial and public sector environments.

In addition, our Medical Laboratory Scientists have a well-defined career in the Health Service. Our programme have been designed to involve a close collaboration with Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH), Okolobiri, Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa and some other accreditated health institutions. The courses offered are designed to expose the students in core areas like Medical Biochemistry, Haematology, Blood Transfusion Science, Medical Microbiology, HistoCyto Sciences, , Virology, Immunology and Molecular Biology

The students are also required to broaden their knowledge by taking ancillary courses in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Biochemistry, Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology and information technology.

Core courses in the clinical areas of the programme must be taught by professional Medical Laboratory Scientists. Moreover, students from their 3th to 5th year of training will undergo mandatory hospital-laboratory postings as trainee Medical Laboratory Scientists to broaden their practical skills under the supervision of practicing Medical Laboratory Scientists.

On completion of the five year degree programme in the University and having passed all the prescribed examinations as well as meeting other necessary requirements, students are inducted into the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) after which they proceed for one year internship in any approved Medical Laboratory in the country. Upon completion they are given license to practice by the Council. This successful completion then qualifies them to proceed for the one year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Philosophy

The philosophy of the Department shall be the training and production of manpower grounded in sound academic and professional background for the production of Medical Laboratory Scientists; To produce Medical Laboratory Scientists who would perform effectively in Medical Diagnostic services and satisfy internationally recognizable standards necessary for National development; To produce Medical Laboratory Scientists with sufficient managerial ability to play a leadership role in training and practice of Medical Laboratory Science through research, scholarship and provision of quality service.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

Students who have successfully completed this degree training programme should be able to:

(a) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of modern concepts and applications of Medical Laboratory Sciences. Medical Laboratory Science being a very dynamic profession with continuous emergence of new procedures and instruments expected every practitioner to keep pace with changing trends.

(b) Perform effectively in medical diagnostic services, preventive and public health services, research, academic and in quality assurance programmes in industries.

(c) Demonstrate competence and practical skills in the following specialties:  Medical Biochemistry, Haematology, Blood Transfusion Science, Medical Microbiology, Virology, Immunology, HistoCyto Sciences and molecular biology.

(d) Function independently or in collaboration with other members of the health professions in providing health care services to individuals, community and the society.

(e) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic medical and biological sciences underpinning modern Medical Laboratory Sciences.
(f) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the biology of diseases.

(g) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the theoretical and practical skills associated with being a practicing Medical Laboratory Scientist.

(h) Produce biological and diagnostic reagents as well as fabricate and maintain laboratory equipment.
(i) Possess sufficient managerial ability to be able to perform a leadership role in the training and practice of Medical Laboratory Science.

The history of the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (B.MLS) programme in the Niger Delta University dates back to 2001, when the programme was established under the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, alongside the Faculties of Basic Medical Science, Nursing and Clinical Science. Following the non-accreditation of the programme by the National University Commission (NUC) in 2005 due to lack of adequate manpower, the faculty was collapsed into a Department in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, College of Health Sciences and the students were farmed into other programmes of the University. The programme was revived in 2007 and secured accreditation from both NUC and Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) in 2008. The Department currently consists of a good number of highly qualified academic staff with cognate educational and professional experience. The Department has two teaching laboratories and research laboratory with molecular biology facilities for the training of students and staff research development. The Department has graduated the first batch of Medical Laboratory Scientists in April, 2015.

The Department offers the following(s);

* Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Medical Laboratory Science

* Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Medical Laboratory Science
