UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES
The Biology programme is a four-year course of study leading to the award of the B.Sc. Degree.
The unique ecosystem of the delta region and the changing needs of our scientific and technological goals have made it imperative on us to recognize major areas of interest to address these needs. It is on this basis that the following programme options have been identified under the basic Biology programme of the Niger Delta University.

  • Botany

Botany, also called plant science(s) or plant biology, is the science of plant life and a branch of biology.

  • Environmental Biology

Environmental Biology offers a rigorous program of study in science related to the environment. This major is designed to provide students with a foundation in population, whole organism, evolutionary biology and environmental science as well as in chemistry and mathematics.

  • Microbiology

This programme emphasizes is the study of microscopic organisms, those being unicellular (single cell), multicellular (cell colony), or acellular (lacking cells).

  • Zoology

Botany or animal biology, is the branch of biology that relates to the animal kingdom, including the structure, embryology, evolution, classification, habits, and distribution of all animals, both living and extinct, and how they interact with their ecosystems.
Under each programme option, students spend the first two years taking foundation courses as approved by the NUC. In the third year of study, all students are exposed to core introductory courses applicable to all the options. In the final year, students are expected to choose any of the available options where they are exposed to basic, applied and multidisciplinary courses to their options. A research project carried out under the supervision of a member of the academic staff and a library research seminar are also expected to be completed during the final year.
Students are required to undergo a programme of “Industrial Experience” during the long vacation months in their third year of study.

POST GRADUATE PROGRAMMES
The Department of Biological Science offers Master of Science (M.Sc) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D)in the following areas;
  Environmental Biology
  Applied Microbiology

  • Alternation of generations in plants
  • Angiosperm life cycle
  • Arabidopsis thaliana: a “model” organism
  • Asexual reproduction in plants
  • Phloem and the transport of food
  • Photoperiodism and phytochrome
  • Photorespiration and C4 plants
  • Photosynthesis: Pathway of Carbon Fixation: the Calvin cycle
