Department of Fisheries

PHILOSOPHY

The general philosophy of the Department is to train production-oriented graduates for effective exploitation and management of the fishery resources of our waters and develop the vast brackish water, back swamps, freshwater rivers and swamps, and the marine environment. The programmes are designed to equip students with broad-based practical and functional skills and technical know-how for boosting fish production as well as tackling problems of fisheries development in the Niger Delta and Nigeria at large.

OBJECTIVES

The programme has the aim of training out and turning out:

To develop appropriate academic and mental skills in fisheries as a foundation for development of the fisheries of the Niger Delta.
To turn out practical and production-oriented graduates who will successfully put their skills into operation by establishing and operating their own enterprises in fisheries.
To train personnel capable of teaching and conducting research that would provide relevant and appropriate solution of fisheries development problems of the Niger Delta and improve fisheries productivity in the area.
To prepare students for a career in their respective areas of specialization in fisheries science.

  • The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Studies offers the following programmes;
  • i) B.Sc. in Fisheries and Aquatic Studies. ii) Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Fisheries and Aquaculture. iii) Master of Science (MSc.) in Fisheries and Aquaculture.
