Medical Microbiology and Parasitology

PHILOSOPHY

Medical Microbiology and Parasitology are taught to Medical students as part of core courses for the Second Bachelor of Medicine professional programme. Medical Microbiology and Parasitology are taught as applied sciences to medicine. As a unit of pathology, the programme of teaching is designed to acquaint doctors in training with all the aspects of infectious and communicable diseases including their natural history, causative agents (aetiologic agents), biology of aetiologic agents, pathogenesis, laboratory identification (diagnosis) and susceptibility of the agent to anti-infective (antibiotics) agents. Classical clinical features of the disease caused by the agent are also discussed.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The objective is that at the end of the programme, the trainee doctor is well armed with adequate knowledge enabling him/her to recognise infective process, make appropriate requests, to the laboratory in quest of aetiologic diagnosis the disease and be knowledgeable in interpreting laboratory reports (results) with a view to making correct decisions on the further management of the patient in question.
