NDU Oilers Triumph at South Ijaw Finals in Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament
The football team of Niger Delta University, the NDU Oilers, secured a commanding victory over Onde United in the South Ijaw Local Government finals of the Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament, held on April 17, 2026, at the university sports field.
The tournament, organized by the Bayelsa State Government in collaboration with the Bayelsa State Ministry of Sports Development, attracted a large turnout of sports enthusiasts, government officials, and members of the university community.
The match, which kicked off at 1:24 PM, saw the NDU Oilers dominate play, defeating Onde United with a 3–0 scoreline. The opening goal came in the 20th minute through Ebinbo John. The second goal followed in the 28th minute, when Isaiah Isaac calmly converted a penalty to extend the lead. Kilete Micah sealed the victory with a third goal in the 30th minute.
Dignitaries present at the event included the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Joana Gigi; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Tonbarapagha Kingdom, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Allen A. Agih; the Director of Sports, Prof. Diepreye Ere; and the Acting Chief Security Officer, Mr. Mac Moses Shidi.
Also in attendance were the Supervisor for Youth and Sports southern ijaw local government, Kalaingo Deo, representing the Local Government Chairman, Hon. Target Isaiah Segibo; the Senior Adviser on Sports Southern ijaw localgovernment, Uyabratei Torubeli; and Dr. Oyinkepreye Bebeteidoh, Asuu Chairman NDU chapter, among other notable guests.
Members of the Central Organizing Committee (COC) included Werepere Diegbegha; Michael Ede Alakere; Ebi Avi; Zulu Noel Ebimotimi; and Morenikeji Ajewole.
With the victory, the NDU Oilers emerged champions of the South Ijaw finals, earning a ₦1 million cash prize and the tournament trophy, while Onde United received ₦500,000 as runners-up.
The event further highlighted Niger Delta University’s growing role in sports development and community engagement, reinforcing the importance of youth participation in athletics across Bayelsa State.
