University and Marine Technology Academy sign MoU for training, research, and industry collaboration
Niger Delta University (NDU) has formally strengthened its commitment to maritime education and capacity development in the Niger Delta region with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Flotila Academy of Marine Technology Limited.
The MoU was signed following high-level discussions led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Allen A. Agih, and the management team of Flotila Academy. The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration in joint programme delivery, practical maritime training, research, and professional development in marine and maritime-related disciplines.
Speaking at the signing, Prof. Agih noted that the partnership aligns with NDU’s mandate to produce graduates who are both academically sound and industry-ready. “This collaboration will bridge the gap between theory and practice, giving our students direct exposure to the standards and skills required in the global maritime industry,” he said.
Key areas of collaboration under the MoU include:
1. Collaborative Programme Delivery – Jointly developing and delivering courses that blend academic theory with practical maritime operations.
2. Practical Maritime Training – Providing students with access to industry-standard facilities and simulations to build technical competence.
3. Research and Innovation – Initiating joint research projects addressing challenges in marine transport, safety, and coastal environmental management.
4. Professional Development – Creating short courses, certifications, and upskilling programmes for professionals in the maritime industry.
The partnership is expected to directly benefit NDU students by enhancing their exposure to real-world maritime operations and equipping them with skills that meet national and international industry standards. It will also contribute to building a highly skilled workforce for Nigeria’s maritime sector and support the country’s blue economy agenda.
Both NDU and Flotila Academy reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the partnership delivers sustainable outcomes for students, industry, and the wider Niger Delta region. Implementation of joint programmes is set to commence immediately.
