Pioneer Council and Principal Officers PDF Print E-mail
Professor E. J. Alagoa, a renowned scholar of international repute, led the pioneer council. The Vice-Chancellor and Registrar were Professor J. C. Buseri and Mr. Perelade Apreala respectively. Other members of the governing council were, Dr. Emmanuel Isukul, Hon. Dr. Boloere Ketube, Dr. (Mrs.) Ayebaemi Spiff, Air Vice-Marshall Larry Koinyan (Rtd) and Chief F. D. Lott. Elected Senate members of the council were Prof. K. Zuofa, Prof. J. F Alfred-Ockiya, Prof. W-A. L. Izonfuo and Dr. P. P. Jumbo. Mr. Renner Tiebiri and Ms. Josephine E. Lloyd represented Ministries of Finance and Education respectively in the council. Rev. E. A. George-Otutru was the pioneer university Librarian. Other officers of note at the time were Mr. Bob Ayoro, the Deputy Bursar, Engr. E. F. Sapere-Obi, the Deputy Director of Works and Services Mr. S. S. Eberiye, the Chief Security Officer (CSO).

A significant event in the historical annals of the university occurred in June 2005 when the pioneer visitor Chief D. S. P. Alamieyeseigha dissolved the Pioneer Governing Council. that Council was headed by Prof. E. J. Alagoa . that same year, the second Governing Council headed by Prof. Kimse Okoko ushered in the appointment of the second substantive Vice-Chancellor and Registrar, Professor Chris Ikporukpo and Sir David Suowari respectively. The team embarked on vigorous and aggressive staff recruitment in the face of an impending accreditation visitation by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Since then, a number of major achievements have been recorded. These include:
  • A successful launching of an Endowment Fund that yielded over N4bn (four billion naira).
  • Online registration process.
  • Computerization of personnel and students academic records.
  • Improved funds for the university.
  • Staff promotions including promotion to professional ranks.

In 2010, following the retirement of Sir David Suowari, Mr Tombra Morris-Odubo was appointed Registrar.

Pioneer Provost/Deans and Commencement of Academic Activities PDF Print E-mail

Academic activities commenced with admission of 1,039 students in 2001. The university started with ten (10) faculties and a College of Health Sciences as follows:

  • Arts, Dr. C. M. Sorgwe – Ag. Dean
  • Education, Dr. W. A. Jonah-Eteli – Ag. Dean
  • Engineering, Dr. B. A. Ozogu – Ag. Dean
  • Law, Dr. F. J. Fekumo – Ag. Dean
  • Management Sciences, Prof. G. S. Angaye – Ag. Dean
  • Science, Prof. W-A. L. Izonfuo – Ag. Dean
  • Social Sciences, Dr. C. O. Opukri – Ag. Dean
  • College of Health Sciences, Prof. Nelson Brambaifa – Provost
  • Basic Medical Sciences, Dr. Kalada McFubara – Ag. Dean
  • Nursing, Prof. Jinadu – Dean
  • Pharmacy, Dr. E. O. Erhun – Ag. Dean

It is also on record that formal classes began in 2001. In the year 2002, the Faculty of Agricultural Technology was established bringing the total number of faculties in the university to eleven (11). The pioneer Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Technology was Prof. Zuofa, K.
