The university located on Wilberforce Island in the heartland of the Niger Delta, opened at the former premises of the Government Secondary School, Amassoma. It therefore inherited the classrooms, laboratories, hostels and other facilities of the secondary school. The university has since then continued to systematically improve on the initial facilities.

While the university administration operated from a liaison office in Yenagoa, the state capital, the staffs and students commuted daily by river craft between Yenagoa and Amassoma. It needs to be observed that the pioneer staffs of the university deserved an appreciation for the sacrifices made.
